The encounter

Species / spectacle: Reef manta ray (Mobula alfredi) - Australia's largest known aggregation (~75% of east-coast individuals identified here; site of the famous pink manta Inspector Clouseau). Also nesting green and loggerhead turtles, migrating humpbacks, a ~20 m-visibility fringing coral-cay reef and seabird colonies.

Best time of day: Dive departures ~07:00 and ~13:00; snorkelling through the day subject to tide; turtle nesting after dark on high tide.

Turtle nesting Nov-Mar and hatching ~Feb-Apr; humpback migration Jun-Oct (songs audible underwater); seabird breeding ~Sep-Mar; coral spawning ~late Dec; >20 m visibility May-Jun.

Permits & responsible travel

Regulation / permits / fees: Within the GBR Marine Park - GBRMPA EMC applied via the resort (Confirm. amount). The island is a private closed destination - access only via Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort by light aircraft; day-trippers depart and return the same airport; day-trip caps (Confirm.).

Guide / crew: All dives personally escorted by resort dive staff (PADI shop on site); guided snorkel safaris and glass-bottom-boat tours; Turtle Rangers guide turtle encounters; self-guided beach snorkelling permitted.

Keep a respectful 3-5 m from mantas, no touching, no flash (Marine Encounter Eco Guidelines); GBRMPA Responsible Reef Practices; turtle-season rules (no beach torches after dark, minimise light, never handle hatchlings).
