Who in your group rides what

Whether everyone in your group gets a day at Taichung Dakeng - the grades on offer, the named zones, and how mixed abilities split up.

What this network spans
Grades 1 to 51-5 (est)
Local grading

Official labels: Trail No.1 Experienced, No.5 Recreational; Trails 1-5 and 5-1 are high-intensity for experienced hikers only, Trails 6-9 and 9-1 suitable for all ages.

Zones & variants

GROUP SPLIT: the dense numbered-trail grid lets groups split by fitness - families take gentle trails 6-10 while stronger hikers tackle the steep log-step ridge (1-5), regrouping at ridge pavilions/lookouts (e.g. Heisong Pavilion) or the Dongshan Rd trailheads, which serve as bail points.

Accessibility & group fit

Family-friendly on gentle trails (6-10, 9-1, all ages); steep trails (1-5, 5-1) explicitly not recommended for the elderly or people with high blood pressure/heart disease. Parking, toilets and a commentator/guide service available.

The riding

Terrain

Mix of stone/cement paving on lower sections plus the famous primitive round-log and wood-plank staircases on steep climbs; dense forest-floor singletrack on connectors.

Technical demands

Signature terrain is round-log and plank staircases on steep ridge spines with ropes/handrails; some near-ladder-steep sections and open ridge lookouts with drop-offs. Grip gloves recommended. Moderate exposure (steep steps, occasional narrow ridge), not alpine.

Navigation

Well-signed government trail system with numbered trailheads (1-10 plus offshoots), maps at entrances, pavilions and lookouts. Waymarking is good.

Crowds

Very popular, especially weekends and holidays; gentle lower trails (9-10) are busy family zones, steep trails thin out but still see regular hiker traffic. Solitude limited.

Season & conditions

Open window

Year-round, no snow; trails effectively always open (sections can close after typhoon/landslide damage).

Best season

Subtropical, year-round; cooler, drier months (roughly Oct-Mar) most comfortable.

Seasonal specials

Adjacent Xinshe Sea of Flowers festival (autumn/winter); Dakeng valley hot springs; the regional Super 8 MTB/enduro festival each December is on Dadu Mountain (west Taichung), not Dakeng.

Typhoon season roughly Jun-Oct (closures/landslides possible); high summer heat and humidity (July approx 27-34 C), afternoon thunderstorms, and biting insects/bees in warm months.

Getting there & gear

None - free public trails, no permit or lottery.

Permits and operators change - confirm before booking.

Trailhead access

Approx 30-45 min from central Taichung by car (east side of city, Dongshan Rd corridor). Parking and toilets at main trailheads.

Transport & shuttles

Bus 66 / 66V Dakeng Route loops the scenic area serving Trailheads 1-4; from Taichung Station take city bus 1, 15, 16, 21 or 31 to Dakeng and transfer to 66.

Bike & gear

Carry your own water (fountains not guaranteed on-trail); grip gloves for steep rope sections, insect repellent, hat and hiking shoes. Mobile coverage generally good near the city.

Facilities

Parking, toilets, viewpoints, bus stops, trail signage, pavilions and a commentator service; restaurants and hot springs in Dakeng village.

Operators

MTB context is Dadu Mountain, not Dakeng. Taichung bike hubs/shops: Giant Bicycles Taichung flagship (rentals), Famous Bikes (service), Bikerlink; the annual Super 8 December enduro festival on Dadu Mountain is the regional MTB hub event.

Hazards & rescue

Hazards

Log-step ridge trails (1-5) are heavily used by hikers and steep/narrow - treat as hiker-priority and not bike-appropriate; bees/wasps (avoid perfume, bright colours, noise); slippery log steps when wet; typhoon/landslide closures. Dakeng is best catalogued as a hiking network, NOT the region's real MTB venue (that is Dadu Mountain).

Guiding

None required; self-guided. An official commentator (guide) service is available at the scenic area.

Emergency & rescue

Dense trail network with many numbered connectors and road crossings allows frequent bail-out to Dongshan/Bu Zi roads; close to Taichung city EMS (119 fire/rescue, 110 police). No wilderness isolation.
