Who in your group rides what

Whether everyone in your group gets a day at Zermatt - the grades on offer, the named zones, and how mixed abilities split up.

What this network spans
Grades 1 to 41-4 (Gornergrat descents)
Local grading

Blue (medium) to black (difficult) per official site; Trailforks green/blue/black. Official framing is 'medium to difficult routes'; few true-beginner trails.

Zones & variants

Beginner/easy: Sunnegga area flow trail down to village; advanced: Gornergrat technical descents, Yo-Yo, and the long Matterhorn Valley Trail to Visp (train back). Groups can split by choosing lift (Sunnegga/Rothorn/Gornergrat) and re-uplift; car-free village allows easy turnaround.

Accessibility & group fit

Best for confident intermediate-to-advanced riders; strong scenery draw. Lift/train uplift makes it group-friendly, but limited genuine beginner terrain.

The riding

Terrain

Natural high-alpine singletrack: rock gardens, roots, loose alpine soil, switchbacks, plus forest trails lower down. Mostly natural, not machine-built park.

Technical demands

Narrow ridge passages, steep rock gardens, tight switchbacks and exposed high-alpine singletrack; blind corners on locals' trails (e.g. Yo-Yo). Significant exposure in places.

Navigation

Signposted Zermatt bike routes and panoramic bike map; Trailforks/komoot GPS recommended. Waymarking present but high-alpine sections require route awareness.

Crowds

Zermatt is a busy resort but bike trails are less crowded than hiking paths; high-alpine descents can feel remote. (est)

Season & conditions

Open window

High trails snow-free ~July-September; lower forest trails open earlier/later. Upper 3000 m sections shortest window. (est)

Best season

Summer to early autumn (roughly late June to mid-October), snow-dependent at altitude.

Seasonal specials

Autumn larch colours in pine/larch forests; peak Matterhorn visibility on clear days. (est)

Rapid high-alpine weather change, afternoon thunderstorms, cold/snow at altitude, and reduced visibility on ridges.

Getting there & gear

No permit/lottery; paid bike day passes/tickets for lifts and Gornergrat railway (bike transport included). No general trail fee.

Permits and operators change - confirm before booking.

Trailhead access

Car-free Zermatt reached by train from Tasch (park at Tasch, ~5 min rail). Trails accessed via village lift/rail stations.

Transport & shuttles

Sunnegga funicular, Gornergrat cog railway and Rothorn/Blauherd cable cars carry bikes; Matterhorn Valley Trail uses Visp-Zermatt train for return. Bike day passes available (Sunnegga/Rothorn areas).

Bike & gear

Enduro/all-mountain bike, full protection and layers for altitude advised; carry water and refill at mountain restaurants. Mobile coverage good near village/lifts, patchy in remote alpine sections. (est)

Facilities

Full resort facilities: bike shops/rental, mountain restaurants, toilets, medical services; Schali Bike Zone nearby in Tasch for practice.

Operators

Zermatters (official mountaineering/bike school), Zermatt bike rental shops, Zermatt Bergbahnen; Tasch Schali Bike Zone.

Hazards & rescue

Hazards

Exposure/fall risk on ridges, rock gardens, altitude effects, weather; yield to hikers on shared alpine paths. Zermatt has no lift-served DH bike park - terrain is natural singletrack.

Guiding

Not required; guiding recommended for high-alpine technical descents. Local guiding available (e.g. Zermatters).

Emergency & rescue

Air Zermatt helicopter rescue and Swiss REGA (1414) cover the region; lift stations and mountain restaurants act as bail-out points. European emergency 112.
