GROUP SPLIT: beginners ride the River Trail and easy singletrack loops near the base; advanced riders take the DH lines and rock gardens, regrouping at the Cascades Lifestyle Centre car park.

Accessibility & group fit

Excellent - unofficial home of KZN mountain biking next to a shopping centre, with trails for all levels; strong family and mixed-group fit.

KZN Midlands clay singletrack through indigenous bush and plantation, with rock gardens and man-made features; grippy when dry, greasy when wet.

Technical demands

DH course was considered one of the less technical on the circuit but had a steep top sector - start rock garden, Eye Boggler drop, corkscrew, Doctor Evil gap. Park overall has rock gardens and drops; moderate exposure.

Well-signed park maintained by the KZN MTB Commission with marked, graded trails; Trailforks coverage good.

Crowds

Popular local park, busy on weekends; large crowds only for major events.

UCI Mountain Bike World Cup DH/XC rounds 2011, 2012 and further World Cup racing; hosted the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships (Greg Minnaar DH and Nino Schurter XCO home/marquee wins).

Adjacent to Cascades Lifestyle Centre, Chase Valley, Pietermaritzburg (approx 11 Cascades Crescent / 23 McCarthy Drive); short drive from the N3, approx 80 km inland from Durban.

No permanent lift; DH riders shuttle by vehicle. Self-drive access from Pietermaritzburg/Durban. -
