Who in your group rides what

Whether everyone in your group gets a day at Chi Ma Wan - the grades on offer, the named zones, and how mixed abilities split up.

What this network spans
Grades 2 to 42-4 (short but technical; skilled intermediate to advanced)
Local grading

Blue to black diamond (AFCD/HKMBA); Trailforks notes blue overall if you dismount the technical sections

Zones & variants

Beginners/less confident riders should avoid or turn back at the first technical sections; advanced riders add the ~3-mile technical extension. No lift - self-powered loop from Mui Wo.

Accessibility & group fit

Best for confident intermediate-plus riders; the technical rock and hike-a-bike make it a poor fit for beginners. Cohesive group of similar skill recommended.

The riding

Terrain

Rocky technical singletrack, stairs, rock gardens and short steep dirt pitches

Technical demands

Very rocky with technical drops, stairs and rock gardens; named features like 'the fridge' (rock drop with off-camber landing) and 'the steps from hell'. At least ~4 sections require dismount; extension adds tight rock traverses and big step-ups/downs.

Navigation

Single undulating trail with no turn-offs (follows Lantau Trail Section 12 corridor); AFCD designated-trail signage. Easy to follow once on it.

Crowds

Quieter and more remote than NT trails; solitude likely midweek

Season & conditions

Open window

Rideable year-round (subtropical, no snow); wet/summer conditions greatly increase risk

Best season

Autumn to spring (Oct-Apr) - dry and cooler; rock is treacherous when wet

Slick rock and stairs when wet; summer heat/humidity and typhoon rain; exposed coastal sections

Getting there & gear

No fee; ride AFCD-designated trail only (off-designated riding prohibited)

Permits and operators change - confirm before booking.

Trailhead access

From Mui Wo ferry pier, ~400 m along the coastal road then steps up to Lantau Trail Section 12; ferry from Central to Mui Wo

Transport & shuttles

No lift/shuttle; access by ferry to Mui Wo then self-ride. Buses serve south Lantau.

Bike & gear

Carry plenty of water and repair kit - remote loop with no resupply; capable trail/enduro bike and protective gear advised. Patchy coverage in remote sections possible (est).

Facilities

Amenities at Mui Wo (shops, ferry pier, McDonald's); minimal on the loop itself

Operators

Hong Kong Mountain Bike Association (HKMBA); Mui Wo / Lantau bike hubs; AFCD country-park management

Hazards & rescue

Hazards

Committing, remote and technical - the loop has no turn-offs; several forced dismounts. Very slippery when wet; carry water and tell someone your plan.

Guiding

None required, but ride with partners given remoteness and technicality

Emergency & rescue

Limited bail-out points on the single loop; roads at Chi Ma Wan/Pui O for exit. HK emergency services (999).
