The riding

Terrain

Foothill and mountain singletrack over rock, scree, dirt and open pasture; rail-trail links to Willowie.

Technical demands

Ranges from family-friendly flow to remote backcountry with scree fields, open pastures and long climbs/descents; the Epic has genuine backcountry exposure and commitment.

Navigation

Signed network with the Epic waymarked; Trailforks/GPS strongly advised for the remote Epic. Many trails cross private land via access agreements.

Crowds

Town trails popular; the remote Epic offers genuine solitude in the backcountry.

Season & conditions

Open window

Ridable year-round; no snow, but summer heat/fire is the main limiter. Over The Edge shop closes January.

Best season

March to December (autumn-spring); summer very hot and high fire risk.

Seasonal specials

The Mount Remarkable Epic is billed as the only ~40 km loop of its kind in Australia starting and finishing at the same spot; Melrose is Australia's oldest MTB town / oldest town in the Flinders.

Extreme summer heat and catastrophic bushfire danger (park closures on such days); exposed high country, sun exposure and rapid weather change on the Epic.

Getting there & gear

No fee for town/private-land trails (thanks to landowner access); the Epic enters Mount Remarkable National Park (National Parks SA) - check park access/fees and closures. Many trails cross private property - respect access.

Permits and operators change - confirm before booking.

Trailhead access

Ride from Melrose main street (Over The Edge Sports, 4 Stuart St); ~3.5 hr drive north of Adelaide. Trails accessed directly from town.

Transport & shuttles

The Epic is a self-powered loop (no shuttle needed); Under the Mount offers shuttles for some other trails.

Bike & gear

Carry ample water and food for the Epic (limited resupply, remote); patchy-to-no mobile coverage in the backcountry. Bring spares/tools; e-MTB hire available from Over The Edge.

Facilities

Over The Edge Sports bike shop/cafe/hire on the main street (ride from the door); town amenities, pub, caravan park. Shop closes January.

Operators

Over The Edge Sports (shop/cafe/hire hub); Under the Mount (bike-friendly accommodation and shuttles).

Hazards & rescue

Hazards

Remote backcountry with scree and exposure on the Epic, extreme summer heat and bushfire closures, snakes, limited water/coverage, and many trails on private land - stay on marked routes and respect landowners.

Guiding

None required, but the Epic is remote and best ridden self-sufficient or in a group; carry the essentials.

Emergency & rescue

Epic route has limited bail-out options in remote sections; town and National Parks SA the nearest help. Carry means to self-rescue; call 000 (coverage permitting).
