Who in your group rides what

Whether everyone in your group gets a day at Kalamunda / Perth Hills - the grades on offer, the named zones, and how mixed abilities split up.

What this network spans
Grades 1 to 41-4 (network spans green beginner loops to black technical descents; pick to suit)
Local grading

IMBA colour grades: Green (easy), Blue (intermediate), Black (advanced/technical).

Zones & variants

Group split: beginners ride green loops and Camel Farm short/medium loops; advanced riders take black technical descents and the full Kalamunda Circuit, regrouping at the Camel Farm hub.

Accessibility & group fit

Very accessible, ~30-40 min east of Perth CBD; green loops suit families/beginners while advanced riders use blacks, so mixed-ability groups can split and regroup at Camel Farm.

The riding

Terrain

Gravelly/granitic singletrack, laterite, rock slabs and machine-built flow through jarrah/marri eucalypt forest.

Technical demands

Mix of machine-built flow and rocky natural singletrack over granite outcrops; punchy climbs, bermed descents and rock features. Black trails add drops and technical rock. Low fall exposure overall.

Navigation

Colour-coded signposted trails linked into a hub network; Trailforks/KMBC maps recommended for route-finding.

Crowds

WA's busiest/most popular network; can be busy on weekends near Camel Farm, quieter on outer trails and weekdays.

Season & conditions

Open window

Open year-round; no snow. Rocky trails ride well in the dry; some clay sections slick after winter rain.

Best season

Autumn to spring (Apr-Oct); cooler, tackier soil. Ridable year-round but hot midsummer days best early-morning.

Seasonal specials

KMBC social/club rides (often meeting at Camel Farm ~8am); WA MTB events use the network seasonally.

Summer heat and high fire danger (possible park/forest closures on catastrophic days); winter rain makes clay/granite slick.

Getting there & gear

No permit or fee to ride the trails (free public access on DBCA/State Forest land).

Permits and operators change - confirm before booking.

Trailhead access

Sealed road access to Kalamunda and the Camel Farm precinct; car parking on site. Sits within Beelu National Park / Mundaring State Forest area.

Transport & shuttles

Predominantly pedal/XC network; no formal lift. Self-drive from Perth; bike hire available locally (Rock and Roll Mountain Biking at the Camel Farm).

Bike & gear

Carry water (limited on trail; hot in summer); mobile coverage generally good this close to Perth. Standard trail bike suits most; capable bike for blacks.

Facilities

Camel Farm hub with parking, cafe/hire nearby; Kalamunda town amenities (food, water, toilets) minutes away.

Operators

Camel Farm precinct (hub); Rock and Roll Mountain Biking (hire); Kalamunda Mountain Bike Collective (KMBC) club.

Hazards & rescue

Hazards

Snakes in warm months, loose rock, shared-use with walkers/other riders, summer heat and fire risk. Check DBCA alerts for closures.

Guiding

None required; self-guided. Local hire operator and KMBC group rides available.

Emergency & rescue

Trails cross/near fire roads with multiple bail-out points; close to Kalamunda townsite and Perth metro emergency services.
