Kangaroo Valley Wombats

The encounter

Species / spectacle: Wild bare-nosed wombats grazing across the camping and picnic grounds, plus kangaroos, birds and other bush wildlife. The site holds a large resident wombat population.

How you see it: drive/trek

Typical duration: Viewing is flexible; most visitors arrive an hour or so before dusk and watch for 1 to 2 hours as wombats emerge. Overnight camping extends the experience into dawn.

When to go

Wombats are present year-round; cooler months and mild evenings can bring more daytime and dusk activity. Camping is busiest over holidays and warmer weekends.

Best time of day: Dawn and dusk are best, when wombats leave burrows to graze across the grounds. Midday sightings are less common.

Options for a mixed group: Self-guided, so groups can spread out; large groups over 50 must notify WaterNSW and school groups book through NPWS. Maximum two vehicles per campsite.

Permits & responsible travel

Regulation / permits / fees: Free day access and free park entry; overnight camping requires a valid WaterNSW booking. Do not feed, disturb or harm wombats or other animals; penalties apply for breaches. (Confirm.)

Guide / crew: No guide required; this is a self-guided public recreation area. Licensed eco-tour operators may run trips under NPWS commercial licences.

Do not feed, chase or touch the wombats; observe from a distance and photograph only. Secure food and belongings and keep the water catchment clean, as this is part of Sydneys water supply.

Safety & hazards

Falling tree limbs, variable river depths and blue-green algae are key risks; avoid swimming for about 72 hours after heavy rain. Do not approach or feed wombats, some of which can carry mange.

Weather / conditions: The campground may close during high rainfall and on total fire ban days; the river can flood. Trees may unpredictably shed branches, so avoid camping under them.

Getting there & staying

Access logistics: Drive from Sydney via the Hume Highway and Kangaroo Valley, turning onto Bendeela Road before Hampden Bridge and continuing about 7 km. Nowra is the nearest service hub.

Accommodation / camping: Camping on site by booking, up to six people and seven consecutive days per site, max 1000 campers per night; no power. Nearby Kangaroo Valley and Nowra offer cabins and motels.

Gear / water / connectivity: Bring camping gear and gas barbecue (no solid-fuel fires); tap water is treated to drinking quality. Mobile reception is limited on site; better on Bendeela or Jacks Corner Road.

Facilities: Basic facilities: toilets, drinking water, portable-toilet dump points, parking and canoe launch points. No power and no dogs or pets permitted.

Crowds / solitude: Can be very busy over holidays and peak weekends with up to 1000 campers; quieter midweek and off-peak. Front area open all year, rear area opens for peak periods.

Nearby operators / hubs: Hub is Nowra, with Kangaroo Valley village nearby. Managed by WaterNSW with NPWS; no on-site commercial wildlife operator.
