Grade & who can come
A river changes grade with its level. These grades describe a normal flow - in flood the same run is harder, and often a different run entirely. Check the gauge before you commit.
Grade I-II
Canadian canoe (primary); kayak; SUP/packraft on calmer reaches
Excellent - 3/4/5-day and 1-2 day sections, jet-boat-assisted options, mixed craft, families. Min age 10 (unguided) with adult supervision; no solo hire (min 2).
Family- and mixed-ability-friendly; the most accessible multiday paddle in the set
The run
'50/50' rapid near Pipiriki (Grade II) - ~50/50 capsize odds for open canoes in low flow; ~200+ small rapids
Few rapids, no standard portages; flooding/freshes, cold water, sweepers in low flow, Tarepokiore whirlpool, jet-boat traffic
Whakahoro to Pipiriki (or Taumarunui to Pipiriki)
Booked-out huts in peak season; the river spreads groups out
