Rain-fed West Coast; gauge Karamea at Gorge: ~1 m optimum (~50 cumecs), 0.9-1.1 m ideal, 1.3-1.6 m high for expert teams, 1.6-2 m lower gorge V/VI, >2 m flooding. Confirm gauge pre-trip.
Oct-Apr; needs carefully chosen weather/flow window

Cool West Coast water; wetsuit/drysuit; not glacier-fed but cold
Drains steep country; rain sends river from difficult to extreme quickly; carry time/food to sit out rain; side creeks can render track impassable
Grade & who can come
A river changes grade with its level. These grades describe a normal flow - in flood the same run is harder, and often a different run entirely. Check the gauge before you commit.
Grade V with portages (III continuous upper, IV+ middle, V portaged sections, IV granite lower gorge); commercial rated 4-5; lower gorge V/VI at high flow

Roaring Lion Rapid (~800 m gauntlet of Class V drops/chutes/house-sized boulders - most portage river left, deflate and pack); earthquake block-up portages above Thor Hut; Ugly gorge; limestone sieves and undercuts
3 major portages plus optional; limestone sieves, undercuts, poorly consolidated rock rearranged in floods; Roaring Lion portage; loaded-boat carries over sharp slippery limestone
Upper granite boulder gardens (III); earthquake block-up portages above Thor (1929 Murchison quake); Roaring Lion Rapid (~800 m, Grade V crux); Ugly / lower granite gorge (IV); Karamea Gorge finale
Extremely remote; roughly one party per year paddles it (hut books); near-guaranteed solitude

Walk-in via western Wangapeka Track (Little Wanganui Saddle) to Trevor Carter/Thor Hut put-in, or heli-in (commercial); take-out Umere Road Fish & Game access point (good parking)
Short ~22 km car shuttle (Umere Rd take-out to Wangapeka Track start); hub Karamea
Abundant DOC huts: Belltown Manunui, Taipo, Trevor Carter, Thor, Crow, Roaring Lion, Greys; hut-hopping possible; commercial riverside camping
Full expedition/whitewater kit; TiZip or open packrafts ease long portages; PLB essential; no comms; extra food for weather delays

Hazards & exits
Limestone sieves/undercuts (bad place to swim); Roaring Lion Class V; rapid flood escalation to V/VI; portage injuries on slippery limestone; treat every descent as a first (river rearranges)
No easy walking escape below Karamea Bend; side creeks impassable in rain; carry PLB; effectively self-rescue only once on river
