North American gravity system - green (easiest), blue (intermediate), black (advanced), double-black (expert), plus pro/race lines.
Two lift-served zones - Basin (Ballhooter lift, Skyline/Powerline) and Western Territory (Western Express lift, Dreamweaver). Beginners lap green/blue off the lifts; advanced riders lap the black/DH lines.
Broad - beginner lessons/tours and groomed green flow up to expert DH; lifts let mixed-ability groups pick their own grade.
The riding
Mixed - machine-built loam/dirt flow with berms and jumps, plus natural rocky/rooty steep tech and rock gardens on the DH lines over rocky Cheat Mountain terrain.
High - famous for steep rooty/rocky World Cup DH tracks with rock gardens, off-camber sections, berms and gap jumps; the 2019+ purpose-built World Cup DH course is notably steep and physical. Also machine-groomed flow for lower tiers.
Marked, signed resort bike park with difficulty-rated signage and official/Trailforks maps (PDF and app downloads); lift-served, hard to get lost.
Popular regional destination (Trailforks ridden counter ~41,000); busy on summer weekends and during events, quieter midweek.

Approx late May to early October; Trailforks lists 2026 season start May 22, end Oct 4 (open as of May 28, 2026).
Summer to early fall (June-September); shoulder edges May and early October.
Hosted UCI MTB World Cup rounds in 2019 (DHI + XCO season finale on a then-new DH course), 2021, 2022 and 2023 (XCO/XCC/XCM/DHI). 2024 hosted the UCI MTB Marathon World Championships; World Cup did not return that year.
High-elevation Allegheny site - frequent fog/low cloud, heavy rain and notoriously deep mud (World Cup rounds known for mud races); trails get greasy and slow fast.
Getting there & gear
Lift ticket required (no lottery); Trailforks lists a bike park day ticket around $40 USD, official site sells single/multi-day tickets and a season pass (also on Ikon/Loam pass). Verify current pricing at snowshoemtn.com.

Snowshoe Mountain Resort, 10 Snowshoe Drive, Snowshoe, WV (Pocahontas County), via WV Route 66 off US-219; remote mountain drive, roughly 4-5 hr from Washington DC.
Two high-speed chairlifts provide uplift - Ballhooter (Basin) and Western Express (Western Territory). No pedaling required for laps.
Full-face helmet and body armor strongly advised for DH; rentals available. Village has water, food and cell/wifi; backcountry sections thinner on signal.
Mountain Adventure Center - large regional bike rental fleet (Kona and Specialized DH/freeride), bike shop, lessons/tours, plus full village amenities.

Hazards & rescue
Steep expert DH tech, rock gardens, gaps/jumps, high-speed flow, mud/slick roots after rain, fog reducing visibility; wrong-tier trail choice is the main beginner risk.
None required; optional lessons, tours and clinics offered via the resort.
Resort bike patrol on duty during operating hours; lift-served laps mean access roads and lift download provide exits; standard resort first-aid.
