Who in your group rides what

Whether everyone in your group gets a day at Llandegla - the grades on offer, the named zones, and how mixed abilities split up.

What this network spans
Grades 1 to 51-5 (green/blue/red)
Local grading

UK/Euro trail-centre colour grading: Green (family/easy), Blue (moderate), Red (proficient/technical singletrack), Black (expert downhill runs accessed only off the Red), plus ungraded specialist zones (skills area, pump track, freeride/jump line).

Zones & variants

GROUP SPLIT: beginners/families take the Green (approx 5 km) or Blue (12 km) and turn back at the Visitor Centre; the Blue and Red share the same gradual climb and split at the top of the forest, so a group can ride up together then divide - stronger riders take the Red/Black (up to approx 21 km). No dedicated uplift/shuttle - all climbing is self-powered (or e-bike); descent-only laps use the skills area, pump track and freeride jump line near the centre.

Accessibility & group fit

Strong all-round family and mixed-ability venue: gentle Green loop for families and beginners, progressive Blue/Red, and Black/freeride for experts. Riders 16 and under must be accompanied by an over-18 guardian; e-bike riders must be 14+.

The riding

Terrain

Mix of hard-packed all-weather forest-road climbs and purpose-built singletrack; surfaces range from smooth compacted gravel (Green) to loose, uneven, unsurfaced and muddy natural singletrack, plus boardwalk and constructed timber/rock features on Red/Black.

Technical demands

Green/Blue are non-technical to moderate with rollable features. Red adds unsurfaced singletrack, large bermed switchbacks, whoops, water crossings, tabletops and boardwalk. Black runs have steep stable-but-unsurfaced pitches with unavoidable steps, gaps, drop-offs and timber structures with exposed edges.

Navigation

Fully waymarked colour-coded routes with numbered marker posts (used for locating riders in emergencies) and an information board at the centre noting diversions. Official trail map available; low navigation difficulty.

Crowds

Popular and can be busy at weekends, school holidays and summer (Aug/Jul/May peak), especially near the centre, skills area and Green loop; the remoter upper Red/Black sections feel quieter midweek.

Season & conditions

Open window

Open all year during forest opening hours; largely snow-free at this elevation though winter can bring wet, muddy and occasional icy/frozen conditions. Green/Blue drain reasonably; Red/Black get muddy after rain.

Best season

Ridable year-round. Busiest and driest months are typically May, July and August; spring-autumn offers the best surface and daylight.

Seasonal specials

Occasional events cause partial closures/diversions (e.g. Welsh XC race rounds); autumn colour around the reservoir and Clwydian Range views are a highlight. Check the centre's updates board.

Exposed higher/remote sections of the Red can be wet, windy and cold; rain makes roots, boardwalk and timber features slippery. Standard North Wales upland-forest variability - carry layers and check the forecast.

Getting there & gear

No permit or lottery. Pay-and-display car parking approx GBP 4.50 per car (approx GBP 10 per minibus; annual permit approx GBP 60); trail use itself is free. Verify current pricing on site.

Permits and operators change - confirm before booking.

Trailhead access

Visitor Centre off a minor road from the A525 Wrexham-Ruthin road, approx 7 miles west of Wrexham; postcode LL11 3AA. Large car park at the trailhead.

Transport & shuttles

No uplift or shuttle service; access by private car recommended. Public transport is limited - nearest larger towns are Wrexham and Ruthin.

Bike & gear

Bring a well-serviced bike, helmet (mandatory per code), spares/tools, food and water; carry a charged mobile phone (advised by the centre). Mobile coverage is variable in the forest; water/refreshments available at the Visitor Centre cafe.

Facilities

Purpose-built Visitor Centre with cafe (well regarded, hearty local food and coffee), bike shop, workshop/servicing, bike hire (standard, full-suspension and e-bikes; helmet hire), toilets and parking. Open Tue/Thu/Fri/Sat/Sun approx 9:00-18:00 (Mon closed except bank holidays and summer school holidays); verify current hours.

Operators

OnePlanet Adventure operates the centre itself (shop/hire/cafe). Nearby Trailforks hubs/areas: Llandegla Forest (1.3 km), Dee Valley (approx 6 km), Clwydian Range (approx 8.5 km), Foel Gasnach and Halkyn Mountain; local directory lists UK MTB Squad and Tweeks Cycles bike shop.

Hazards & rescue

Hazards

Slippery boardwalk/roots when wet; unavoidable jumps, gaps, drops and exposed timber edges on Black/freeride; timber-haulage and forestry operations plus race-day diversions can close sections - stay on waymarked routes and check the notice board. Centre contact: 01978 751656, hello@oneplanetadventure.com.

Guiding

None required - self-guided waymarked trails. Under-16s must be accompanied by an adult guardian; solo riding is discouraged by the centre's code of conduct.

Emergency & rescue

Numbered waymarker posts help pinpoint location for rescue; forest-road network allows exit/shortcut back to the Visitor Centre where staff can assist. Call 999 in emergency. Nearest A&E: Wrexham Maelor Hospital (LL13 7TD, tel 01978 291100), grid ref SJ 240524.
