Who in your group rides what

Whether everyone in your group gets a day at Skyline Rotorua Gravity Park - the grades on offer, the named zones, and how mixed abilities split up.

What this network spans
Grades 3 to 53-5 (blue to double-black)
Local grading

NZ Grade 3-6 (approx 33% G3, 17% G4, 33% G5, 17% G6 per official data)

Zones & variants

Mixed group splits by trail grade off the single gondola: less confident riders take Grade 3 flow lines while advanced riders take Grade 5-6 technical/jump lines, all regrouping at the base. Gondola provides all uplift so it is a shuttle-served descent park with no pedalling required.

Accessibility & group fit

Descent-only gondola park suited to intermediate-plus riders; not suitable for absolute beginners as all trails are Grade 3 and above. Bike hire and lessons available on site.

The riding

Terrain

Machine- and hand-built singletrack through native and exotic forest on Mt Ngongotaha; mix of flowy dirt, berms, jumps and technical rock/root.

Technical demands

Gravity-focused: fast flow, jump lines, berms and technical rock/root descents; some trails have step sections and exposure to steep edges requiring high skill.

Navigation

Purpose-built signposted park with graded/named trails and maps at base and gondola top; low navigation difficulty within managed network.

Crowds

Popular commercial park, busiest on weekends, holidays and during events such as Crankworx; can be quieter off-peak.

Season & conditions

Open window

Open all year (low-elevation, generally snow-free); operates to gondola schedule.

Best season

Year-round; New Zealand's only all-season gondola-serviced bike park.

Seasonal specials

Off-peak uplift passes offered; individual uplift passes sold in packs of 5, 15 or 40 valid for a year, from about $2 per run. Venue for the annual Crankworx festival.

Rain can make technical volcanic/clay sections slippery; wind or storms may affect gondola operation.

Getting there & gear

Paid gondola uplift passes required (single, multi-pack of 5/15/40, or season options); no lottery.

Permits and operators change - confirm before booking.

Trailhead access

Base station at 178 Fairy Springs Road, Fairy Springs, Rotorua, about 5 min from the city centre with on-site parking.

Transport & shuttles

Gondola uplift (cabins carrying up to 4 bikes and riders, 7-8 min ride) is the primary uplift; no self-shuttle needed.

Bike & gear

Full-face helmet and gravity/enduro bike recommended; water, cafe and amenities at base and summit complex; good mobile coverage near Rotorua.

Facilities

Base and summit complex with cafe/restaurant, toilets, bike hire, retail and parking; luge and other Skyline attractions on site.

Operators

Rotorua is an IMBA Gold Ride Centre; nearby Whakarewarewa Forest (The Redwoods) network and multiple local bike shops, shuttle and coaching operators.

Hazards & rescue

Hazards

Gravity park with jumps, drops and technical descents; protective gear strongly advised. Operator has announced closure of the Rotorua mountain bike and Crankworx operations, with tracks set to close 25 March 2027 - verify operating status before planning.

Guiding

None required; independent riding. Lessons and coaching available.

Emergency & rescue

Managed commercial park with staff, first aid and gondola access for evacuation; trails feed back to the base.
