Who in your group rides what

Whether everyone in your group gets a day at Port Hills Trails (Victoria Park / Bowenvale) - the grades on offer, the named zones, and how mixed abilities split up.

What this network spans
Grades 1 to 51-5 (green to double-black)
Local grading

NZ Grade 2 (green) through Grade 5/black; nine green trails, many intermediate, plus expert technical chutes and drops in Victoria Park.

Zones & variants

Group split: beginners climb Rapaki and take gentle traverses; advanced riders continue to Victoria Park technical descents or the Bowenvale Downhill; descent-only riders can be dropped at the top via Summit Road.

Accessibility & group fit

Very good for mixed groups on the city edge; beginners on green trails and Rapaki, advanced riders on technical Victoria Park lines.

The riding

Terrain

Volcanic clay and rock singletrack, 4WD tracks and gravel over tussock and scattered forest; some rocky technical sections.

Technical demands

Wide range: smooth climbs (Rapaki) and intermediate flow to steep technical chutes, drops and the classic Bowenvale Downhill (Grade 3). Some exposed volcanic bluffs.

Navigation

Council-signed reserve tracks; dense network so Trailforks app strongly advised. Well used and mapped.

Crowds

Busy weekends and after work given the city-edge location; quieter midweek and on harder trails.

Season & conditions

Open window

Rideable all year; occasional winter snow/frost on the tops but rarely closes trails for long.

Best season

Year-round; drier and less windy in late spring through autumn. Can be hot and exposed in midsummer.

Seasonal specials

Firm, fast tracks in summer; green tussock and clear harbour views on settled days.

Strong nor'west winds and exposure on the tops; rain makes volcanic clay slippery. Post-earthquake rockfall zones exist - respect closures.

Getting there & gear

Free public access to Christchurch City Council reserves; no permit.

Permits and operators change - confirm before booking.

Trailhead access

Multiple sealed-road trailheads (Bowenvale Ave, Rapaki, Victoria Park, Summit Road) minutes from Christchurch city.

Transport & shuttles

Self-shuttle via Summit Road for descent-only laps; Christchurch is well served by air and public transport.

Bike & gear

Standard MTB kit; carry water as the tops are dry and exposed. Cell coverage generally good near the city.

Facilities

Carparks and toilets at main trailheads (Victoria Park, Bowenvale); cafes and bike shops in Christchurch.

Operators

Chain Reaction, Christchurch Adventure Park and city bike shops; ChristchurchNZ tourism.

Hazards & rescue

Hazards

Post-quake rockfall closure zones (e.g. some eastern tracks), exposed windy tops, slippery clay when wet, shared/dual-use tracks. Check council closures.

Guiding

None required; self-guided. Local shops offer hire and coaching.

Emergency & rescue

Multiple valley exits close to the city; generally good coverage. Dial 111 for emergencies.
