Who in your group rides what

Whether everyone in your group gets a day at Mt Victoria Mountain Bike Trails - the grades on offer, the named zones, and how mixed abilities split up.

What this network spans
Grades 2 to 52-5 (green to double-black)
Local grading

NZ grades 2 to 6; a mix of grade 3-4 flow and tech trails, several grade 5 descents and progressive jump lines, plus black-diamond tracks such as TTS and Hippie's.

Zones & variants

GROUP SPLIT: beginners and families ride the mellower grade 3 flow trails and the easy climb/road to the saddle, while stronger riders shuttle or pedal to the Alexandra Road summit for grade 5 descents and jump lines; regroup at the Pirie Street playground or the summit.

Accessibility & group fit

Extremely accessible, roughly 1 km from Wellington CBD; suits quick after-work or lunch rides and mixed groups given the short trails and easy summit access.

The riding

Terrain

Hard-packed dirt singletrack with roots, rock features and built jumps/berms, threaded through regenerating bush and pine within the town belt reserve.

Technical demands

Steep, root- and rock-laced singletrack with jumps and drops on the harder lines (some black-diamond trails average 15-19% grade); lower exposure than alpine terrain but consequences on the steep, hard-packed descents.

Navigation

Dense, maze-like network of intersecting trails that can confuse first-timers; club advises riding with a local or using Trailforks. Managed by Matairangi Trail Builders; some signage present.

Crowds

Popular and shared with many walkers and runners given the central location; expect company, especially near the summit and at weekends.

Season & conditions

Open window

Open all year; no seasonal snow closure (low-elevation coastal hill).

Best season

Rideable year-round; drier and firmer through the Wellington summer and autumn (roughly Nov-Apr).

Wellington's strong winds are the main hazard, exposed on the ridgeline; rain makes hard-packed and rooty sections slick.

Getting there & gear

Free public access; land is Wellington City Council town belt reserve, no permit required.

Permits and operators change - confirm before booking.

Trailhead access

Access from the playground at the top of Pirie Street, or from suburb-side entrances at Hataitai and Newtown; the summit is reached via Alexandra Road.

Transport & shuttles

Easy self-shuttle by car or e-bike up Alexandra Road to the summit; public buses serve the summit lookout. No commercial uplift.

Bike & gear

Standard MTB kit and helmet; good mobile coverage across the hill; carry your own water though the CBD is minutes away.

Facilities

Playground and parking at the Pirie Street base; cafes, shops and full services in the adjacent CBD and Hataitai/Newtown.

Operators

Wellington MTB Club and Matairangi Trail Builders; multiple Wellington bike shops and hire outlets in the CBD.

Hazards & rescue

Hazards

Heavy shared use with pedestrians, steep black-diamond descents, jumps/drops and slick roots when wet; ride to the conditions and control speed on shared paths.

Guiding

None required; first-timers advised to ride with a local or use Trailforks due to the maze of trails.

Emergency & rescue

Numerous exits onto surrounding city streets; central location means rapid access to urban emergency services (dial 111).
