Grades 1 to 41-4 (green to black)
Local grading

Accessibility & group fit

Flagstaff suits families and mixed groups near town; Bay of Fires suits fit, experienced groups (shuttle minimum party sizes apply). Mountains-to-sea appeal for adventure riders.

The riding

Terrain

Purpose-built singletrack; Bay of Fires runs from wispy sub-alpine scrub through myrtle canopy and rainforest into dry sclerophyll and finishes on white-sand beach terrain; hero dirt sections. Flagstaff machine-built flow and gravity trails.

Technical demands

Flagstaff offers flowing green/blue trails plus black descents. Bay of Fires is a remote, long backcountry descent through sub-alpine scrub, myrtle/rainforest and dry sclerophyll to coast - committing, with a long shuttle and exposure to remoteness; experienced riders only.

Navigation

Waymarked and mapped on Trailforks and official site; Townlink connects town to Flagstaff trailhead. Bay of Fires signed but remote - carry map/GPX.

Crowds

Flagstaff busier near town; Bay of Fires descent feels remote and uncrowded, shuttle-dependent.

Season & conditions

Open window

Low coastal trails effectively year-round; Blue Tier top is sub-alpine and can be cold/wet with occasional winter snow.

Best season

Rideable much of the year; spring to autumn best. Coastal-to-mountain range means variable conditions.

Blue Tier top exposed to cold, wind, fog and rain even when St Helens is mild; conditions change over the descent. Coastal heat lower down in summer.

Getting there & gear

No trail permit or entry fee for public access; shuttles and hire are paid. No lottery.

Permits and operators change - confirm before booking.

Trailhead access

Flagstaff trailhead off Flagstaff Rd (parking, shuttle drop-off, toilets, cafe 'The Lid'); St Helens depot at 21 Quail St for Bay of Fires shuttles. Blue Tier accessed by shuttle vehicle.

Transport & shuttles

Gravity Isle and other operators (Vertigo MTB, Derby Shuttles) shuttle to Blue Tier for Bay of Fires and to Loila Tier descents; Bay of Fires shuttle approx 9:30am depart, ~40 min uplift, mid-point support at Ansons Bay Rd. Minimum party sizes apply (e.g. 4 riders).

Bike & gear

Carry water and layers for Bay of Fires; bike hygiene/wash stations at Loila Tier, Ansons Bay halfway and Flagstaff. Mobile coverage patchy to nil on Blue Tier descent - carry map/GPX. Trail/enduro bike recommended.

Facilities

Flagstaff trailhead: parking, toilets, recreation area, bike hygiene station, 'The Lid' cafe. Three bike hygiene stations network-wide. Services in St Helens town.

Operators

St Helens town hub; Gravity Isle; Vertigo MTB (uplift/hire); Derby Shuttles; Destination Bay of Fires.

Hazards & rescue

Hazards

Remote committing descent with poor phone coverage, rapid weather on Blue Tier top, long shuttle, and advanced terrain; not for beginners. Snakes in warm months; wash bikes to limit pathogen spread.

Guiding

Self-guided; no guide required, though Bay of Fires shuttle support and experience strongly recommended given remoteness.

Emergency & rescue

Ansons Bay Rd crossing is the main mid-route access/exit and support point on Bay of Fires; Flagstaff near town services. Remote sections limit quick rescue - call 000, carry PLB advisable.
