Beginners: green village trails and chairlift blue descents (International). Advanced: black gravity (Copperhead, ABOM, Outlaw) or full Australian Alpine Epic point-to-point. Descent-only riders use Northside Express chairlift or paid shuttle; Epic riders can turn around at The Pinnacle.
Chairlift and shuttle uplift suit gravity groups and mixed abilities near village; Epic suits fit, experienced riders only.
The riding
Purpose-built alpine singletrack, machine-built flow, rock gardens, granite/schist tech, and back-country fire-road/river sections on the Epic.
Alpine gravity trails include rock, roots, berms, jumps with A/B lines; Epic has remote high-country exposure and long committing descents. Weather exposure above treeline.
Signposted resort trail network with maps; Alpine Epic waymarked but remote back-country sections require self-navigation and Trailforks/GPS.
Village gravity trails busy on lift-operating weekends and holidays; the Epic offers remote solitude in its back-country middle section.
Season & conditions
Approx late December to April; snow-free typically November to May. Chairlift 2025/26 ran 27 Dec to 11 Jan then weekends/public holidays to Easter.
Summer to autumn (December to Easter), aligned with lift/shuttle operating window.
National Downhill Championships hosted 18-22 March 2026; Northside Express chairlift returned for summer riding after 7 years; 10 km of new gravity trails slated to open November 2026.
Alpine weather: rapid change, cold, wind, fog and thunderstorms above treeline; trails close in poor conditions.
Getting there & gear
Gravity Uplift pass required for lift/shuttle (approx AUD 82 adult 1-day pre-purchase, up to 3-day passes; season pass available). Resort entry fee applies to vehicles in season. No lottery.
Permits and operators change - confirm before booking.
Mansfield to Mt Buller road (approx 3 hrs from Melbourne); park at Horse Hill for the chairlift or in the village; Mirimbah at the mountain base is the Epic finish.
Northside Express chairlift plus paid gravity shuttle (Blue Dirt) covered by a Gravity Uplift pass, roughly 10am-4pm on operating days.
Full-face and pads recommended for gravity; Epic riders must be fully self-sufficient with food, water, tools and layers. Mobile coverage patchy in back-country.
Village cafes, bike shops, hire, wash, medical centre, Spurs cafe at chairlift top; toilets and services in village.
Mansfield township hub; Blue Dirt (shuttle/uplift operator); local bike shops and hire in Mt Buller village.
Hazards & rescue
Alpine exposure, fast gravity trails and remote Epic sections. Reports indicate the Australian Alpine Epic has had closures/limited maintenance in places - verify current status before riding.
